Touchstone: Experience a Colors In Motion moment

Near and Far achieves the Colors In Motion mission by offering viewers an opportunity to contemplate the rhythm between dreamy nostalgia and a clear focus of a personal experience of presence. That sojourn through diffused and focused awareness brings people to a place of centered calm.

Near and Far sources two unique catalogs of photographs from Allen Maertz : the Views from the Train portfolio, taken from New York up the Hudson River, paired with a series of intimate botanical photographs from Hawaii.

Views from the Train left a lasting impression on Linda DeHart from 25 years ago in Allen's New York studio. "To work with this hauntingly and beautiful blue collection from long ago and bring it forward to merge with the vivid colors of the botanical imagery in the present was an exceptional experience." says creative director Linda DeHart.

Allen's active participation in the creative process was vital, co-creating strategies for the merging of colors and form. "The challenge to synthesize two very different bodies of photographic work shows a rich way forwards, opening up new visual possibilities in future collaborations," notes Allen.

Colors In Motion worked with composer and musician Stan Strickland in an improvisational recording session. Stan was inspired by watching the composed visuals, weaving an aural narrative to them in real time with the flute, saxophone, and harmonica.

Allen and Stan's mastery of their crafts made this Touchstone especially innovative. "Working with such exceptional material from collaborating artists is always exciting for me," says digital compositor Christopher Graefe. "From the intricate detail of each photograph of Allen's to the inventive musical explorations of Stan, we were able to create a rich, transcendent experience."
